Inspirada en el supuesto intento de atentado contra Franco y Eisenhower durante la visita del presidente de Estados Unidos a España (1959) y en la documentación obtenida por el autor en la sede de Al Fatah en Ginebra, Doble Dos es «una danza de muerte que nos obliga a pensar en eso que nos rodea cotidianamente, el absurdo del horror», según escribía Julio Cortazar en Les Nouvelles Litteraires. La idea de una agencia que opera a la sombra de la CIA y que, como otros monstruos de su invención, escapa a su control era una hipótesis aventurada que la génesis y ubicuidad del terrorismo de nuestros días ha confirmado. Es en Doble Dos donde por vez primera se denomina «vacuna» a la estrategia de crear un falso atentado para, provocando los anticuerpos, evitar otro que pudieran realizar. Juego no exento de peligrosa ambigüedad y, en alguna ocasión, de trágicas consecuencias. Pero Doble Dos es, sobre todo, una novela trepidante y asombrosamente actual, cuya adaptación cinematográfica escribieron Sam Peckinpah y Gonzalo Suárez en los Ángeles y de la que Ray Bradbury llegó a afirmar que era el Farenheit 451 de la política ficción.
