Con clásicos como El grado cero de la escritura, Sobre Racine o S/Z, el escritor francés Roland Barthes sentó las bases de una aproximación a la literatura que tomara los presupuestos del estructuralismo y la semiología como fundamento para la creación de una verdadera “ciencia del texto”. Sin embargo, todo ello no surgió de la nada. Ya en los años cuarenta, Barthes empezó a concebir una poética hermenéutica en la que la crítica se convirtiera también en creación y la interpretación del texto surgiera de la escritura misma. Este libro pretende seguir ese itinerario, a lo largo de más de treinta años de labor intelectual, y mostrar al lector todos los pasos intermedios.
De André Gide a Albert Camus, de Jean Cayrol a Alain Robbe-Grillet, de Stendhal a Guy de Maupassant, los textos aquí reunidos atraviesan la historia de la literatura francesa con espíritu inquieto e incisivo y, lejos de convertirse en una simple recopilación, terminan siendo el testigo de dos trayectos paralelos: el de la cultura europea desde la posguerra hasta los umbrales de la posmodernidad, una época de gran excitación cultural en todos los campos, y el del propio Barthes, personaje privilegiado de esa apasionante historia y sin duda uno de sus máximos representantes.
