Daniel Miller está conduciendo de noche a través del Bosque de Dean, buscando una cabaña en la que planea refugiarse. Su mujer le ha dejado. Su doctor no le entiende. Le tortura la idea de que no es un individuo libre, sino el personaje de un libro. Un horrible y sórdido libro. Es el Autor quien le obliga a hacer esas cosas que tanto le asquean: maltratar a su mujer, irse con prostitutas, obsesionarse con la pornografía… Desesperado por escapar de la tiranía del Autor, vuelve ahora al lugar en el que pasó su infancia, porque tiene la ligera esperanza de que allí podrá recuperar el control de su vida. Pero en cuanto llega a la cabaña, su historia le abandona, porque la verdad es que Daniel Miller ES el personaje de un libro. Un libro escrito por un hombre al que de repente le aterroriza pensar que haya quien piense que la historia de Daniel Miller sea autobiográfica.
La primera novela de Dennis Potter, “El escondite” (1973), es una estupenda, vibrante y divertida obra de metanarrativa en la que las distintas capas entre autor y personaje van desplegándose como en un juego de muñecas rusas, mientras se nos presentan temas clásicos de la obra de Potter: la religión, el sexo, la familia, la traición y, por supuesto, el concepto del autor como Dios.
