Este libro relata la extraordinaria historia de un grupo de veinte pacientes ingresados en el Hospital Monte Carmelo de Nueva York, supervivientes de la gran epidemia de encefalitis letárgica que alcanzó dimensiones planetarias en los años veinte del siglo pasado, y del asombroso y súbito «despertar» que experimentaron cuarenta años más tarde gracias al doctor Oliver Sacks, que les administró l-dopa, un medicamento de reciente aparición por aquel entonces en el mercado. Las anécdotas que cuenta de esa serie de pacientes son siempre conmovedoras, dan testimonio del valor con el que se enfrentaron a la enfermedad y a veces tienen connotaciones trágicas. Despertares, considerado ya un clásico de la literatura médica, apareció en 1973 y ganó el Premio Hawthornden de ese año. Desde entonces ha inspirado un documental televisivo, guiones radiofónicos, obras teatrales y una notable película.
