En 1947, con la publicación de su primer libro, Charles Olson no solo revolucionó la aproximación canónica a la obra maestra de Herman Melville, sino que también multiplicó para el siglo XX las posibilidades del ensayo como género literario. Según Olson, Moby Dick solo habría cobrado su forma definitiva cuando su autor, tras una iluminada relectura de las tragedias de William Shakespeare —especialmente Macbeth y El rey Lear—, reorganizó la narración según una estructura cercana a la de los actos del drama isabelino, insufló vida al fáustico capitán Ahab y dotó a la ballena blanca de su inconmensurable densidad simbólica.
Al igual que en el panorama de la novela decimonónica Moby Dick resultaba un proyecto radicalmente moderno en el que, junto a la narración propiamente dicha, convivían con naturalidad el tratado de estética, el diálogo teatral o el texto enciclopédico, Llamadme Ismael es igualmente en su composición un erudito y personal discurso ensayístico, un libérrimo homenaje a la heterodoxia melvilliana.
